Oct 24 2011 "Genetic Counseling " Dr. Kathleen Valverde Genetic Counseling Program, Arcadia University, Glenside, PA This year marked the 40th anniversary of the first graduating class from Sarah Lawrence College's Masters in Human Genetics program. Presently there are 33 genetic counseling master's programs in North American. This talk will provide a historical overview of the genetic counseling field including a discussion of how the role of the genetic counselor has changed over time. While the majority of genetic counselors still work in clinical settings a growing number are employed by diagnostic laboratories, health departments, pharmaceutical companies and research institutions.
